An interesting monument and a triumph of the art of reconstruction, although the setting, close to a noisy landfill site and recycling centre, is not ideal. In the 17th century John Aubrey mentions three stones remaining here, one of which was taken by a farmer around 1680 to make a bridge (and later returned to the circle). The site was extensively damaged by gravel extraction, and also by the construction of an airfield during World War II, when the henge’s original external bank was levelled for the construction of the runway. By 1940, only one stone remained, with some others buried near their former positions while the airfield was in use. Excavations in 1940, 1972, 1973 and 1988 provided a complete plan of the 79m (259ft) circle, with its stone-holes, and the position of a central setting of posts. The henge, with a ditch diameter of 120m (394ft) and entrances to the ESE and WNW, is late Neolithic; the date of the circle is less clear. Between 2002 and 2008 both circle and henge were fully restored and now once again 36 gravel conglomerate stones stand within the henge, bright and fresh-looking and almost golden in colour.
